White + Black = Simplicity

When a client comes to you asking for you to produce something that makes people talk my first thought is always less is more. Luckily (in this case) the client happily agreed so the task was on to create something that spoke volumes without using all the print techniques possible. Happily we have an alai in the form of James from Taylor’d press who is most accommodating in sharing his knowledge of print and to discuss possible solutions.

With a strong mono brand style well established, my aim was to push the current style further by injecting texture through the choice of stock and reinforce the high standards of Fiona Evan’s (a renowned business and marketing consultant) work through beautiful printing.

A linen stock was chosen for the tactile nature it gave to the cards. The white linen stock was triplexed with Optix Jetz Black 20gms in-between the Tablex Textures – Netting 280gsm to add that sharp contrast and flash of deep colour. Printing was kept for a minimum to retain that purity, with the logo black foiled and the back details are set within a double hit back area.

Busy, Busy BBC times

Over the past couple of months I’ve found myself lost in the depths of the BBC. Always an amusement to myself that I travel to the other side of the world and end up speaking to London doing projects for BBC Worldwide.

Having developed a good working relationship we have undertaken 4 website over the last few months which has lead to some late nights. Below are a coupe stills from the microsite for the brand relaunch for BBC Knowledge, together with a site on the BBC Entertainment channel to house the Home of British Comedy. Still to launch are BBC HUBS South Africa and, any day now, Come Dine With Me microsite for South Africa… phew!

Hot off the press

After months of redesign, deliberation, amends, new concepts and finally printer debates the new business cards I designed for R&B Creative have arrived. The design ended up drawing back to its simplest form by duplexing two different coloured sheets of Concept Vellum and incorporating a black foil onto the mahogany coloured side of the cards. Simple and confident, printed by the great folk at Taylor’d Press.

Britain’s funniest

Here’s a little taster from a micro site I designed for BBC Entertainment… presenting… the home of British comedy! The site features a voting system allowing views to choose their funniest scenes and also who their favourite British comedian is. All built and launched within 8 weeks from initial briefing things have been a little bit stressed in the studio getting this one out. You can have a look see here.

Agency site launch

With many late nights, the odd heated discussion and over 14 different versions the new R&B Creative website has finally gone live. Always a tricky brief tackling an agency redesign (now my 3rd agency website design… think I’m jinxed) but well worth the trouble. It’s not quite complete as we have a few more updates we are going to be making over the next couple of weeks but there’s plenty to see with new projects, all the latest news and a glimpse at the culture that goes on at the company. Future of design…

As part of the Queensland GCIT Teachers Conference, I was honored to be asked to share my design experiences, life working in an agency and thoughts on the future of design. The 2 day conference featured creatives from all fields stretching the length of the Coast and Brisbane, sharing their ideas and experiences with teachers from all around Queensland.

My talk consisted of sharing my ideas on what being a ‘designer’ means in today’s modern agencies. I believe that with the evolution of design mediums, designers are no longer pigeonholed into specialised fields but are asked to be problems solvers, copy writers and a host of other roles. Drawing on over 9 years of experience, both in my native UK and here in Australia, I spoke about my fascination (bordering on obsession) with typography, views on problem solving by simplify problems down to their fundamental question and how I see the future of design developing.

Finishing with the concept that simple, engaging ideas will aways find their way to the intended audience, he shared a few examples of effective campaigns from European phone company Orange, ‘Winter Warmer‘, and Coca Cola’s latest edition of the ‘Happiness Experience‘ – both well worth viewing.

Other speakers on the day included Joe Brumm, an awarding winning animator, who has worked around the world and has now set up his own studio in Brisbane. Well worth checking out his work, especially his award-winning short ‘Causes‘ which took out the Brisbane International Film Festival some years ago. Joe echoed my sentiments that a stimulating work environment and being able to fit into a close-knit team were some of the highlights of his experience working in a number of high profile London studios.

Royal Bunting

The Brits in the studio showed their true patriotic colours with a display of some fine Royal decoration throughout the office. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with some electrical wire, some tiny pegs and 50+ printout of Will & Kate. The response was mixed however, throw in some Pimms and a BBQ everyone was soon looking forward to the Royal event!
